From the Muni to the Streets: Muni Kids, Street Golf and a Story Worth Filming

If you’ve followed Reinland Golf Co. for any length of time, you probably know we’re a family business.

What you may not know is just how intertwined our story is with another golf brand in our family: Muni Kids.

Before Reinland Golf Co. was making handmade golf headcovers, Maxton and Drew Reinland were building Muni Kids around something all of us understood pretty well—the culture of municipal golf.

We grew up around golf. We played the local muni. We made friends through the game. We competed, laughed, argued over putts and spent more hours around golf courses than we’d probably care to count.

But golf was never about exclusivity to us.

It was about the people.

And now that idea is becoming a film.

A Golf Documentary About Something Bigger Than Golf

Filmmakers at Hot Juice Studios are currently developing a feature-length documentary centered around Muni Kids and the street golf community that has grown around it.

The project follows Muni Kids’ version of urban street golf from Portland to cities around the country—taking golf away from traditional fairways and putting it in streets, alleys, parking lots and neighborhoods.

No tee time.

No green fee.

No dress code.

Clubs and balls are provided, and people can simply show up and play.

That’s a pretty simple idea.

But sometimes simple ideas become something much bigger.

How Muni Kids Street Golf Started

Muni Kids was founded in Portland in 2015 by brothers Maxton and Drew Reinland as a golf streetwear brand inspired by municipal golf culture.

Over time, it became much more than clothing and golf gear.

Street golf became one of the most interesting parts of the Muni Kids community.

The concept takes the basic pieces of golf—a club, a ball, a target and a little competition—and drops them into an urban environment.

A loading dock can become a tee box.

An alley can become a fairway.

A wall can become part of a hole.

And someone walking down the street who has never touched a golf club can suddenly be standing over a ball trying to make par.

Muni Kids now hosts regular street golf meetups in Portland and has taken street golf events to cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta and Chicago.

Growing the Game Doesn’t Always Start on a Golf Course

Golf is changing.

For generations, the traditional path into the game was fairly predictable. Someone introduced you to a golf course, you found some clubs, learned the rules and eventually became a golfer.

Today, people are discovering golf in all kinds of different ways.

Driving ranges. Simulators. Social golf venues. YouTube. Fashion. Art. Music.

And sometimes on a Thursday night in Portland with a foam golf ball sitting on pavement.

That’s what makes this story interesting to us.

Street golf isn’t trying to replace traditional golf.

We love traditional golf.

We love its history, its courses, its architecture, its equipment, its traditions and the lifelong friendships the game creates. In fact, much of what we make at Reinland Golf Co.—from wool golf headcovers to classic designs—is rooted in that history.

Street golf simply creates another door into the same game.

And the wider that door gets, the better.

Two Golf Brands. One Family.

There is another reason we’re especially proud to see this story being documented.

Reinland Golf Co. probably wouldn’t exist without Muni Kids.

Maxton originally began experimenting with handmade golf accessories while developing products for Muni Kids. Those early handmade wool headcovers eventually led to the idea of creating a separate company devoted to timeless, handmade golf goods.

That company became Reinland Golf Co.

Today, the two brands have different personalities but share the same roots.

Muni Kids explores the intersection of golf, streetwear, art and urban culture.

Reinland Golf Co. celebrates craftsmanship, classic golf style and handmade golf accessories.

One can live in the streets.

The other might be wearing Harris Tweed.

They’re still related.

Literally.

Where Art Fits Into the Story

Drew Reinland has always occupied an interesting space between golf and art.

A former golf professional and college golf coach, Drew is also the artist behind many designs found across both Muni Kids and Reinland Golf Co.

That relationship recently came together in our Every Stroke Should Be Bold collaboration, which transformed Drew’s original artwork into handmade canvas golf headcovers.

It’s another example of what we’ve watched happen within golf over the past decade.

The culture surrounding the game has expanded.

Golf can still be wool trousers and a Sunday foursome.

It can also be streetwear, paintings, music, sneakers, handmade headcovers and a nine-hole golf course built through a city block.

There is room for all of it.

Why This Film Matters to Us

The documentary describes Muni Kids as the “spine” of the film.

As their family, that makes us pretty damn proud.

Not because someone decided to make a movie.

But because the movie exists because people kept showing up.

What started with an idea about municipal golf culture eventually became a community. That community became weekly meetups. Those meetups traveled to other cities. People who had never played golf picked up clubs.

And somewhere along the way, there was a story worth putting on film.

We don’t know exactly where that story ends yet.

That’s probably what makes it worth watching.

Golf Has Always Been About More Than Golf

We started Reinland Golf Co. because we love making things.

We love beautiful wool, good design, craftsmanship and golf equipment that has some soul behind it.

But underneath all of that is the same thing that has always mattered most to our family:

the people you meet through the game.

Whether someone discovers golf at a country club, a municipal course, a driving range or standing in the middle of a Portland street doesn’t matter much to us.

They found golf.

Welcome to the family.
